Insurance Commissioner Julie Benafield Bowman has been elected vice chair of the Southeastern Zone of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The Southeastern Zone is comprised of commissioners and regulators from Florida, West Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. www.insurance.arkansas.gov

Commissioner Matthew Denn has revived his efforts in the state legislature for three reform measures that address health insurance and medical malpractice insurance. The bills regulate health insurance rates, create a health insurance pool and attempt to lower the cost of medical malpractice insurance. The governor and insurance commissioner are pushing a bill to create an incentive program for property insurers to operate in the state. Carriers that commit new capital for property insurance in the state and that take over policies covered by the state’s last-resort insurer would receive a grant matching their capital investment. >> Bulletin 07-01 addresses a requirement for written disaster plans for all property and casualty insurance carriers in the state. www.ldi.state.la.us


Many homes in three counties that were flooded by a Nor’easter were not covered for flood damage. The Insurance Council of New Jersey says that at the end of February 2007, there were only 215,271 active National Flood Insurance Program flood policies in the state. >> Commissioner Steven Goldman has issued a public notice concerning the state premium subsidy for medical malpractice insurance. Gov. Brad Henry vetoes major tort reform bill that would have altered procedures, requirements and rewards for class action lawsuits. While supporting reform, he says the bill tied the hands of the state while doing nothing to stop frivolous lawsuits. State Attorney General Drew Edmondson asked Henry to veto the bill saying it would impede the state in its litigation. >> Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland contracts with Psychological Services to administer insurance license testing. www.oid.state.ok.us

The report includes a summary of health insurance regulation, data about the market as a whole, financial profiles of the largest insurers in Oregon, an overview of cost-control initiatives and recommendations to improve the affordability and effectiveness of commercial health insurance.www.cbs.state.or.us
