Commissioner Kevin McCarty joined by state CFO Alex Sink, chairs an NAIC-sponsored meeting in Atlanta to explore creation of multi-state catastrophe plan. Commissioner Sandy Praeger prepares to consolidate control of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) committee structure. Commissioner Praeger will likely be elected NAIC president next year. MISSOURI

Bills in the legislature seek to provide consumer protections in the medical discounts market. SB 381 and HB 586 require discount medical plan organizations to register with the director of the Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions and Professional Institutions. www.insurance.mo.gov/

NEW YORK

Insurance department has licensed Bergstresser Insurance as a captive carrier. Bergstresser will insure the risks of Dow Jones & Co., which publishes The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s. “New York, with its investment management talent and vibrant financial services industry, is the natural home for captives, and proposed new legislation would open up this opportunity to an even broader range of companies,” Says Eric Dinall, acting insurance superintendent. www.ins.state.ny.us/news1.htm
